Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of sight loss, affecting more than 600,000 people in the UK. We provide this service at CHEC Watford and Coventry. Symptomatically, AMD causes gaps or dark spots in your vision and may make straight lines look wavy or bent. When you are reading, words may appear distorted or jumbled on the page. There are two forms of AMD – wet and dry. Wet AMDWet AMD develops when abnormal blood vessels leak into the macular (this is the small central point of the eye’s retina, responsible for central vision) and causes scarring and loss of central vision. Wet AMD can develop rapidly but is treatable when diagnosed quickly enough. Most patients with Wet AMD will receive a course of treatment where a medicine called anti-VEGF is injected into the eye to slow down the growth of new blood vessels. This might sound scary, but the small procedure is painless as anaesthetic drops are dispensed into the eye to numb the injectable area; the needle used for the injection is just 12 mm long. Dry AMDUnlike Wet AMD, Dry AMD is the slow deterioration of the macular cells. There is currently no treatment for Dry AMD, but if diagnosed early enough, steps can be taken to inhibit its progression. This may include an alteration in lifestyle through diet, cessation of smoking and taking supplements such as vitamins. Understanding Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD):Your Comprehensive Guide Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent condition that impacts the central part of your vision, potentially affecting daily activities such as reading, watching TV, and recognising faces. If you are experiencing AMD, you may notice blurriness, distorted lines, gaps or dark spots in your vision, and a diminished vibrancy in colours. Key Insights Development with Age: While AMD is more commonly observed in individuals aged 65 and above, it can also develop in the age range of 40 to 50. Risk Factors: The exact cause remains unknown, but AMD is more prevalent in smokers, individuals with high blood pressure or poor dietary habits, and those with a family history of AMD. Regular exposure to sunlight without adequate protection is also a contributing factor, with the condition being more common in women. Possibility of Bilateral Involvement: AMD can affect one or both eyes. Wet AMDCause:Growth of abnormal blood vessels at the back of the eye.Progression:Onset is rapid, leading to vision deterioration within weeks or months.Treatment:While there is no cure, the progression of wet AMD can be slowed with regular treatments.Dry AMDCause:Build-up of a fatty substance at the back of the eye.Progression:Gradual decline over several years.Treatment:Currently, there is no cure for dry AMD. Early diagnosis allows for steps to slow its progression, such as vitamin supplements, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking.
